The search for renewable energy sources has brought some interesting technologies to light. While solar and wind power, hydropower and even geothermal power offer help for homeowners and other stationary situations, the situation is different with automobiles and other vehicles. Here, biofuels can be of immense value. What are biofuels? How do they affect the world? What are the newest options in these new fuels and how can you use them in your vehicle?
Ethanol - Perhaps the most obvious example of biofuels is ethanol. While most of the supply in the US is made from corn, it can actually be made out of almost any type of biomass, from corn to grass and more. Ethanol offers some benefits, but the primary benefit is the fact that it is not derived from petroleum. However, it is not as efficient as gasoline and does not provide any benefits in terms of fuel mileage, or even in emissions.
Biodiesel - Yet another biofuel that has debuted on the world stage is biodiesel. Made of vegetable oils or fats, biodiesel can be run in almost any unmodified diesel engine. This source of energy can also be run in standard vehicles, once the engine has been modified sufficiently. The problem with biodiesel is that it can often be more expensive than gasoline or regular diesel, though it does provide far greater fuel mileage and does not produce the emissions associated with gasoline or even ethanol. Biodiesel can be more affordable when made from free or discount sources, though.
Hydrogen - Often considered the Holy Grail of biofuels, hydrogen is one of the ideal solutions for alternative energy production in vehicles. However, hydrogen does have some problems, as well. For instance, it requires considerable modification to run in a vehicle, while the hydrogen delivery system is not perfected yet. Hydrogen fuel cell vehicles might be the future of the automotive world, but their current uses are somewhat limited in terms of scope.
Algae - Many scientists are looking to algae as an acceptable biofuel. Algae can be used to create biodiesel and some can actually be used to produce hydrogen and energy to move the vehicle. However, algae harvesting and energy production methods are still in their infancy, so don't expect revolution just yet.
Biofuels energy can be an incredible way to reduce your impact on the environment. However, you will have to find a solution that fits your needs and your budget, as well.
