It's no secret that the impact of human affairs on the natural world has increased. Global warming, pollution and deforestation are only a few of the things that have occurred. Environmental policies have been put into effect by almost every nation in the world in an attempt to reverse ongoing trends and improve the condition of the natural world. What are environmental polices? How does such an environmental policy statement impact you?
Environmental policies are put in place to reduce harmful effects of human changes to the world at large. These apply to almost every area of life, but are felt the most in the business and manufacturing world. The rationale behind an environmental policy statement is that aftereffects of human activity can actually worsen global markets and living conditions for humans. Surprisingly, these policies are not put into effect solely for the benefit of the environment or animal and plant life.
Environmental policies and similar statements can be made on a number of different levels. Most consumers are familiar with international accords, such as the Kyoto Accord (which the US did not sign), but there are many others, as well. Such policies can be made on the national level, the state level or even the local level, as well, depending on the amount of popular involvement in such an area.
Environmental policies and related statements are enforced through a number of different means. For instance, incentive plans like tax rebates and other financial incentives are meant to help consumers and businesses adopt a more eco-friendly outlook and take appropriate steps to curb greenhouse gas emissions as well as developing alternative energy sources. As an example, the US federal government offers limited incentives and tax breaks for homeowners and businesses adopting alternative energy systems, such as wind, solar and geothermal systems.
The most famous (or infamous) such environmental policy instrument is that of carbon credits, where one nation can purchase credits from another country who has a lower amount of carbon production. This supposedly helps offset the amount of carbon and other greenhouse gases produced by developing and industrialized nations.
Environmental policies and environmental statements by governments should become increasingly stringent as the threat of global warming worsens. It should not come as a surprise to find even more incentives available for adopting alternative energy, as well as stiffer penalties for companies that do not adhere to current policies regarding the product of pollutants.
