Renewable Energy Explained
Renewable energy is simply energy that is harnessed from natural resources such as tides, wind, geothermal heat, rain, and sunlight, which occur naturally and replenish themselves naturally as well. In recent years, thanks to the emergence of the green movement, renewable energy has become a buzzword; used everywhere and by everyone from the top officials in our government, down to children in preschool. Everyone is trying to live a greener lifestyle, everyone is taking into account that we all have an impact on the environment and that it is up to each of us to decide whether that impact will be positive or negative. While they may be eager to become more energy independent, many do not yet know much about the many resources we have for alternative energy. This may also be a reason why many people think that moving to a greener way of life would be too inefficient for their families. Luckily, information is continuing to spread and it is only a matter of time before everyone knows the ins and outs of our renewable energy resources. A few of resources are explained below.
Solar energy is perhaps the most popular among those just joining the green movement, maybe because it the most noticeable. We feel the warmth from the sun’s rays when we are outside, we see the light it provides for us, and when always know when it is not there, either during times of cloud coverage, or in the cold darkness of the night. Its power is easily harnessed and converted into electricity by solar panels. Water is not only a great source of renewable energy, but it fuels the basics of life, and is a basic necessity each day to ensure our continued existence. Water energy is generally harnessed by means of watermills or hydroelectric dams. It makes up for just under 20% of the entire world’s energy usage. Wind is another one of the most important renewable energy sources, and can be harnessed anywhere from giant turbines in Kansas field down to a homemade wind generator in your back yard. While all of these resources are key factors in a greener lifestyle, it should be noted that the technology behind harnessing renewable energy sources is still in beginning stages. Although technology is growing in leaps and bounds, no one source of renewable energy is yet able to take the spotlight off of commercial electric sources. However, when used in combination, many homes and businesses are able to become energy independent, and it is only a matter of time before it is made readily available at a price anyone can afford.
If you are interested in these sources of renewable energy, or any of the other alternative energy sources out there, a quick search on the internet can provide you with thousands of links to helpful information. Even if you cannot yet take advantage of these renewable energy resources, there are thousands of other ways that you can live a greener life and change the impact you have on the environment to a more positive one.
