Energy Conservation and You

What is energy conservation? A traditional definition of energy conservation views it as the practice or method for decreasing the total amount of energy used. The next question many ask is “why is that necessary?” The answer is: global warming. Most of our modern energy needs are met by the burning up of fossil fuels. This means massive coal burning power plants, nuclear and hydroelectric power sources and even some natural gas or biomass systems as well.

What occurs during the majority of these activities is the release of greenhouse gases into the atmosphere. They remain there and allow the total temperature of the planet to rise. This in turn presents a wave of issues that if left unabated could easily change life as we know it on the planet – that is not an exaggeration.

Global warming has all ready caused the polar ice caps to begin melting, we have already witnessed some shifts in global weather patterns and some species have already felt the impact of a loss of habitat and natural food sources. These trends will continue and increase unless people begin to put energy conservation plans into practice.

This can be done in amazing number of ways. Among the first things to address is household consumption of energy supplies. This means the amount of electricity, heating fuel and cooking gas should be analyzed and total numbers reduced. This can be done by installing energy efficient appliances, windows and doors and by replacing all light bulbs with energy saving models. There are literally dozens of things any individual or family can do to reduce their energy consumption, but it does really help to look at everything used or purchased to also consider how much energy is used in its manufacturing.

For example, consider the clothing you purchase. The materials, manufacturing, transportation and cleaning could all add up to huge amounts of energy consumed, and for this reason it is a wise idea to always make informed purchases whenever possible.

Of course, businesses can really make a huge difference in energy consumption as well and there are all kinds of initiatives for becoming a zero carbon entity. This means reducing supplies, purchasing environmentally-friendly equipment and supplies when available, reducing the need for employees to travel by implementing telecommuting when possible and purchasing carbon offsets. These are a wonderful way for individuals, families and businesses to contribute to alternate energy production, reforestation and energy efficiency initiatives to offset the effects of their carbon emissions.
